Steve & Caroline mann- senior pastor and wife
Steve was born and grew up in West Virginia. Caroline was born and grew up in Tennessee. This has led to many discussions about who is the purest hillbilly.
After moving to Sciotoville, Steve graduated from East High School in 1975.
Both Steve and Caroline graduated from Tennessee Temple University (Chattanooga, TN). They moved back to Sciotoville in 1980 where Steve served as assistant pastor to his dad Fred Mann at Berean Baptist.
In 1985, their lives took a dramatic turn when they left to join ABWE (Association of Baptists for World Evangelism) where they served in England and Western Europe in church-planting and restoration. After 32 years with ABWE in Western Europe, they returned to Berean where Steve now serves as pastor.
Steve and Caroline have four children and eight grandchildren. They both work to keep each other grounded in reality. Steve loves fried chicken, but Caroline hates making it, so she never does. Caroline dreams of sitting in a rocker on the front porch knitting, but Steve keeps her too busy to do it. This shatters the myth that love is about fulfilling each other’s dreams. They both have a passion to please God. One of many favorite verses of Scripture is Philippians 2:13: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
Fred Conkelin- youth pastor
Fred Conklin was born in Florida, but moved so many times that he is not sure where home resides. Jess Conklin was born in Ohio and lived in the same house for 19 years. Guess which one does not like to move and which one does not like to stay still.
Fred graduated from high school in Bluefield, WV after which he attended school at Appalachian Bible College in Beckley, WV where he met his lovely wife Jess. The two were married and upon graduation began working for ABC as Admissions Representatives.
After a two year period, Fred began looking for a Youth/Associate pastorate and not long after the search began God opened doors at Berean Baptist Church. This led to Fred and Jess joining Berean staff summer of 2017.
Fred and Jess have 2 kids: Isaac and Elora; who are so full of life that sleep is non-existent. Jess loves to crochet and sew in her spare time (whenever she can find a few minutes) and cares deeply for her family. Fred enjoys reading, hiking, fishing, and playing video games. His favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 3:20 – “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us.”
We have five serving deacons, dedicated to serving our congregation and community.
